Painting as the Macchiaioli at Palazzo Fantini
Wednesday, April 08, 2009
The Tuscan Romagna, famous for its sparkling light, soft colour, temperate climate and exquisite beauty has for centuries enjoyed a special place in the hearts of artists such as Silvestro Lega, one of the most important representative of the Macchiaioli painters, who spent in Tredozio part of his life. We would like to extend our enthusiasm for this “paesaggio romagnolo” by offering to Torre Fantini guests, on site painting workshops based upon your individual requests.
Whether you are an experienced artist or a beginner just wanting a painting holiday, our program is designed to be informative and accommodating. We provide the opportunity for artists to work at special places where man, land and flavours meet harmoniously in great sensuous beauty.
Who are the Macchiaioli? Some of Italy's all time most important artists: Giovanni Fattori, Giuseppe Abbati, Silvestro Lega, Telemaco Signorini and more. They preceded the French Impressionists.
Professor Gene Baldini is offering “en plein air” painting sessions at the splendid garden of Palazzo Fantini in Tredozio this summer. Baldini's lessons focus on "alla prima" techniques of painting as practiced by the Macchiaioli painters. He gives no nonsense practical advice regarding the construction of a picture and the manipulation of the materials that allow a beginner or advanced person the opportunity to learn and improve.
Baldini, a native born American who has resided with his family in Italy for the past twenty years received an M.F.A (Master of Fine Arts) from the prestigious Hoffberger School of Painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art. There he studied under the direction of Grace Hartigan and Salvatore Scarpitta. His B.F.A. (Bachelor of Fine Arts) was earned at the University of Illinois.
He has been the recipient of numerous prizes and awards including a Fulbright fellowship to Italy for painting. He has exhibited on a regular basis in the U.S and various countries in Europe since 1975. His teaching experience spans sixteen years of working with students at all levels. His work may be found in various private and public collections both in the US and Europe.
